Although
Asian countries should work together against the nuclear program in North
Korea, international relations are not the best between South Korea and Japan,
two of the most powerful Asian countries.
According
to the South Korea president, Park Geun-hye, a summit with the Japanese Prime
Minister, Shinzo Abe, would be useless. The reason of this opinion is the
Japanese refusal to admit and apologize for what they did. During the first
half of the 20th century, Japan colonized South Korea and treated
very bad. Women worked as “comfort women”.
It’s why
Park said it could be better to do not have a summit with Japan. If Japan keeps
the same opinion about the history of the two countries, without excuses or
resolutions, debates between them will stay difficult.
Recently,
the US tried to help them to speak together, but without real progress.
The next
hope to see better relations between them is the six-party talks, where they
are both participants.
Last week,
Park said she is open to a summit with Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader.

ReplyDeleteWell, the history problem in the first half of the 20th century between China and Japan is also tough, But Chinese government choose to look forward and forgive. For the nuclear weapons problem in North Korea, I think it is wise for South Korea to put the history dispute aside temporarily.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Lucy. To cooperate to stop North Korea from using nuclear weapon and intimidating, we should not consider the issue between Japan and South Korea.

ReplyDeleteThe debates on history between South Korea and Japan has been long and not a simple problem to just set aside. It is more complicated than it looks.

ReplyDeleteYeah you are probably right. There are several kinds of problem.
It's maybe necessary to take care of current problem before historical problem in this case.
But you are probably more informed about this subject but maybe a South Korean could disagree with you.

ReplyDeleteI think there might be a unspoken concern. South Korea is in a very ackward and embarrased situation in which it needs an assistance to protect itself from the threats from "brother" and the same time it cannot ally its"enemy" to defend safety. The dilemma is, if South Korea cooperates with Japan, which means it compromises to serious historical issues that exist for half a century,it will become the perfect excuse made for North Korea to ingite anger among its nation that the South Korea prefers to unite "enemy"to fight against "family".Let us suppose it might be trigger a war in Korean Peninsula. At this time, Japen will certaintly step aside. It will be the South Korea who suffers the potential outcome.
